Leadership Selection

I. Desirable Traits for Leadership Couples

We believe that leaders should have the same basic character traits that the Bible outlines for church leadership, as stated in 1 Timothy 3 . However, it should be understood that KCCHS is NOT a church and that some of the qualifications should be understood with that in mind. For example, "able to teach," should be understood as "able to address the group and effectively communicate" and likewise, "hospitable" should be understood as "friendly, having a servant's heart."

" 1 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap." - 1 Timothy 3:1-7 [New International Version]

II. Qualifications for Leadership Couples

  • Experience - couples should have homeschooled for at least four (4) years.
  • Membership - couple should have been members of KCCHS for at least one (1) year.
  • Church Affiliation - each couple should be committed to a local church.
  • KCCHS Statement of Faith - each qualified nominee agrees with and has signed the KCCHS Statement of Faith.

III. Leadership Team Responsibilities

  • Lead, coordinate and advise committees and individuals in a manner consistent with the group's vision/mission statement.
  • Encourage and direct members to participate in group activities and events for the mutual edification of the group.
  • Attend monthly support group meetings and leadership meetings as scheduled.
  • Attend leadership conferences and communicate proceedings to the group.
  • Record and maintain minutes of all leadership meetings.

IV. Terms of Office

  • Team Size - there should be four to five couples on leadership.
  • Term Length - each couple, upon election, will serve for as long as they feel God's calling to do so.
  • Term Staggering - every year, elections will be held to elect new couples to the team and to re-elect existing team members, as a vote of confidence in God's calling on the leadership couples.

V. Election Process

  • Call for Nominations - At the January support group meeting, the leadership informs the membership of the need for new leadership, explains the process and calls for nominations to be submitted by the March support group meeting. Self nominations are allowed. Each member may nominate as many qualified couples as desired. The Leadership Team will select two or three members from the group to serve on a Nominating Committee, for the purpose of screening and selecting couples most qualified for leadership.
  • Nomination Deadline - The March support group meeting marks the last time that nominations are accepted. The Nominating Committee will then meet with the Leadership Team in March to consider the nominations and also to recommend additional nominations.
  • Preparation of Slate - A couple requires at least two nominations to be considered a qualified nominee. Leadership interviews all the nominees and assesses the nominations in a spirit of continual prayer (1 Thess. 5:17), according to established qualifications (Sections I and II) and the nominees' willingness to serve. Qualified nominees will fill out a standard questionnaire regarding their salvation, church affiliation, and home schooling and KCCHS experience and vision. This will serve as the slate.
  • Presentation of Slate - At the April support group meeting, leadership presents the slate to the membership and membership is asked to prayerfully consider participation in the election process at the May support group meeting. If membership has serious questions or concerns they may contact Leadership. Discussion of the slate should be closed by two weeks prior to the election.
  • Leadership Elections - At the May support group meeting, the voting members present participate in the election process using a paper ballot, voting for up to the number of positions open. The results are immediately counted and announced. The couples receiving at least 51% of the vote will be placed into leadership immediately. Absentee ballots will be available upon request. They must be received in a signed, sealed envelope prior to the May meeting.

VI. Resignations & Dismissals

  • If for whatever reason a couple should need to step down from leadership (e.g. emergency), the vacant position should be left vacant until the next election.
  • If for whatever reason a couple should be asked to step down from leadership, the vacant position should be left vacant until the next election.
